Most enjoyable evening. Bouillabaisse excellent.
Chez Fonfon is located in a very beautiful small harbour with lots of authentic charm. We went there to try their famous bouillabaisse. Unfortunately the soup didn't taste of much and the prize was far to expensive. We wouldn't go there again.
The setting is simply amazing- beautiful & unique view. Unfortunately that is where it ends. We were seated by the window with the sun boiling us never offered to close the shutters despite our clear discomfort. The bouillabaisse was bland & boring. The waiters uptight. Wished we’d tried the other restaurants around this one.
Recommended by our hotel for bouillabaisse and well rated in Trip Advisor, for lunch. At 1:30 there was no wait and a few empty tables. Charming environment on an out of the way marina. Ordered cuttle fish for a starter which was good but turned out to be unneeded since they provided a fresh tuna-salad starter with the meal and bread. About a pound of fish served per person, so bring an appetite. Broth was flavorful and fish perfectly cooked. Only complaint is service was only semi-attentive. We had to ask for water twice the first time, and always for a refill (never offered). After wine was served we mostly had to keep our own glasses filled. That said, staff were friendly and helpful. Pricey but an authentic Marseilles experience.
We were not attended to very much and it did not feel like an authentic bouillabaisse experience (particularly give the price). The setting was the biggest redeeming quality.
The service was horrible! We order short drinks and wine but after 50 minutes got the short drinks. From the staff None of them speaking foreign language. We are really disappointed due that!
Excellent bouillabaisse and oysters. Service is friendly but at a superficial is level. When it came to really honor customer request the staff were annoyed and did nothing to accommodate our wishes. The upper floor gets quite warm and even, if there are tables downstairs, they were not willing to give us another table. And instead of just acknowledging their problem with insufficient air conditioning , the waitress tried to argue that it’s not that hot and air conditioning at the max. After this argument the waitress did her minimum. She did lots of explanations about bouillabaisse at other tables but did nothing at ours. It also takes long time to wait for the food and then to pay you have to go downstairs. inadequate service for a restaurant that charges 53 Euros for a fish stew
TRES BON RESTAURANT
The Fonfon website said reservations would be cancelled if the client were 15 minutes late. I was kept waiting for 13 minutes after my reservation time before the restaurant door was unlocked and I was allowed to enter, even though the staff could see that I was waiting outside. I had La Bouillabaisse. I enjoyed the first 5-6 spoonfuls of the soup. After that it was all much the same and very disappointing. The fish, which was 2-3 times more than one could possibly want, seemed to have been cooked by boiling. It all tasted much the same. The staff were friendly but the maitre-d'hotel was very condescending because I was not familiar with the in-house knowledge of how to eat the meal. I was given the smallest glass of champagne I have ever been served. I know that this is supposed to be the best restaurant for La Bouillabaisse in Marseille but in my experience the dish was nothing special and bordering on unpleasant.
Great location but unfortunately service was not great: waiters did not clear used plate before serving our next dish and simply placed the next dish over the used dish; our entree of « fresh fried cuttlefish » was average; we went for the traditional bouillabaisse which was not served in the traditional manner; even when we requested the garlic cloves they were not brought to us and the soup was served without the fish and garlic; wait staff did not leave us the soup but rather claimed they would pour it for us, which resulted in us not being able to get more soup when done - I suspect they were serving the same pot of soup to multiple guests - at 53€ a person this does not seem correct to me; the bouillabaisse was overly salty. I would not go again nor would I recommend this restaurant. There are better options for bouillabaisse serving restaurants.
The bouillabaisse was wonderful, a real treat – and the woman who looked after us for the evening was very kind and helpful throughout our meal. Please pass on our heartfelt thanks to her and all at Chez Fonfon.
A Marseille monument, fantastic traditional cuisine and attentive service. Go for a Bouillabaisse for the real experience.
Great location and ambiance overlooking pretty fishing point. Service friendly and attentive. We had fish of day - sea bass which was cooked to perfection. It was our wedding anniversary and the whole experience was perfect. Highly recommended
Une institution bien rodée et un personnel au top....
Everything i’d read about Chez Fon Fon was accurate. The food (Bouillabaisse ), atmosphere, service were all excellent. Bilal gave the best, most professional service we could’ve ever imagined. He even gave us instruction on the proper (traditional) order in which to eat Bouillabaisse. And the Bouillabaisse was superb. Thank you to the entire staff. This special experience topped off a great day visit to Marseille for my wife and I.
A great experience at Fonfon. The staff was welcoming and the Bouillabaisse was excellent! This traditional soup was delicious, cooked with care and different fishes.
Excellent bouillabaisse and carpaccio. Service was spot on; taking away plates as we finished and bringing us more water throughout the meal. Great atmosphere and location. Enjoyed!
Nice place for Bouillabase
